GT7 braking on controller: find your marker and release the brake

Choose a repeatable braking point, practise releasing the brake and check what changed. A real gamepad recording shows why braking later alone does not guarantee a faster corner.

· Admin

Braking too early costs time, but simply moving your braking point later can leave you struggling to turn. On a controller, practise two decisions separately: where to start slowing down and how to release the brake as you approach the corner.

What the real recording shows

We compared laps A = 1 (1:30.358) and B = 5 (1:30.839) from ApexTrace on Sardegna - Road Track - B in the ELANTRA N TC ’24, recorded on 17 October 2026. The driver confirmed that these were gamepad laps. The figure below is reconstructed from saved telemetry, not an application screenshot.

In the selected braking zone, the first sample with at least 5% brake input occurs at 521.2 m on A and 507.9 m on B. Speed at those samples is 206.6 and 197.9 km/h. The last sample at or above 5% is at 613.0 and 573.6 m respectively. These distances use lap A as a shared spatial reference; they are not trackside braking boards.

B starts braking earlier here, but also approaches more slowly. The two traces therefore do not prove that an earlier or later marker is intrinsically better. Look at the release as well as the start: these are observed attempts, not an ideal braking curve to copy.

A repeatable controller exercise

Choose one corner, one car and fixed conditions. Keep tyre choice, assists and controller settings unchanged. If your layout uses analogue triggers, use their available range rather than treating braking as only on or off. First choose a visible landmark that leaves enough margin to make the corner reliably.

Repeat several attempts with the same landmark. Then work on releasing the brake progressively rather than holding it until the car must turn sharply. Change only the release on this set of attempts; do not simultaneously move the marker, change brake balance and disable assists. There is no universal trigger percentage or release duration for every car and corner.

How to judge the attempt

Compare approach speed, brake onset, release and speed through the corner at matching positions. Include time to a point after the exit. A later start is not an improvement if the car spends longer slowed down or reaches the following straight more slowly. Repeat a promising attempt before treating it as progress.

What the graph cannot tell you

The channel is the brake input reported by the game, not finger force or a measurement of hydraulic pressure. Samples were aligned by projecting B onto A’s path and interpolating; the 5% threshold is an editorial measurement rule. Tyres, assists, traffic and setup equivalence are unverified, so this is an observation, not a controlled test.

You can practise the exercise in GT7 without installing anything. To inspect your own attempts, record a session in ApexTrace and compare speed, brake and throttle. Use the linked guide for setup, the lap-time article for broader diagnosis, and the corner-exit article to check what happens after braking.
